Fake v Real

Hi Folks, I can't believe it's a week since my last post........how has time passed so quickly, and within that time there has been huge devastation in Japan of such magnitude.  It's so sad, and does make you re-think your own concerns and gripes.........

Life here has been moving on, we have another birthday to celebrate on Tuesday, Toby will be 11 (teenage years approaching!).  He's off Go-Karting with a friend and hubby - any excuse!

Jack and I have had a nice morning feeding the ducks along the river, and then the obligatory nose round the charity shop!  More of that next week.

Back to my title - fake v real - of the leafy, flower variety.  As much as I love having real flowers in the house, I can't always justify the cost.  At the moment it's OK as daffs are so cheap and cheerful.  It dawned on me a while ago that I've actually got an awful lot of faux plants and flowers - I think they've come an awfully long way since the days where they were just 'naff'. (or maybe you still think that!).

I love having them dotted around as they brighten up a room day in day out.  My latest addition is this pretty floral garland which I've draped over the dresser.

Here's a selection of some of my other's

What's your opinion on fake v real?

I also have quite a few fake ones around but do like to have real ones occasionally. Nothing can beat red roses from the one you love.

Nothing like the real thing but I do have a little bunch of anemones witting on my phone table in the hall, a posy of silk roses on the guest bedroom side table and an ivy in a pot on top of a shlef in the kitchen where a real one wouldn't grow as not enough light oh and my sunflowers so yes I obviously like fake too!

Oops that should be sitting not witting!

My mum has always had a mix of both dotted round the house and I think if the fake are good then definitely go for it. I've thought about getting myself some fake flowers as I can't always justify the expense of real ones either.

I love real flowers but as you said, the cost can't always be justified. So I do have the fake variety dotted around too. In fact I bought some today! The are just as lovely as the real thing displayed in a cute little jug! Cx

I have both in the house, the only downside with the fake ones is of course is the lack of scent! However, with a house full of hayfever sufferers this probably isnt such a bad thing!!
I just wanted to ask about your table covering - it looked lovely.............did you put a fabric runner over an oilcloth??? If this is the case - I never thought of doing that before!

I agree ... I love bunches of real flowers in jugs, but sometimes they can be so expensive. So I also have some fake ones which come out at certain times of the year. I feel the need to be seasonal ... so the poppies only come out in summer etc.

I think that some fake flowers and plants can look wonderful especially good quality ones, Yours are beautiful!
I do prefer the real thing but I have a mixture of both in my home. I have a few fake plants as my cat loves to chew them and many house plants are quite poisonous to cats.

Thanks for the info! I have the same dotty tablecloth from Dunelm but in beige. I need to renew it with a pink one to suit my new decor, but havent been able to find one that I like that is different to the one I have. By putting a fabric runner on top it will look fab plus will be easy to remove when we (or the kids!) are eating!! Very good!!! I like that one!

I love both! I have to say that real has the edge over fake, but with 4 kids (3 of whom are teenage lads) and two over-excitable cats, plus a DH who is quite clumsy (bless him!!) in certain strategic areas of the house fake are all I dare risk, together with unbreakable vases!!!!!

Your flowers look lovely over the dresser.I have bunches of daffs everywhere as they are so cheap right now. Fake flowers are so much better than they used to be,and sometimes you have to actually touch them to see if they are real or not.The knitted one is fun! :0)

I think you're right, fake flowers HAVE come a long way since my mum's dusty, neglected ones in our house when I was little. I especially love the ones that you have draped over your dresser. I have to admit spring flowers are my favourite, so am really enjoying the daffs and tulips at the mo. Have a fab week, Sarah.

They are all gorgous and look so realistic I love the garland i certainly think they are alot easier to take care of than real ones ..just a little dust once in a while and they are happy and last forever ,far better than expensive real ones

I'm afraid that it they have to be real for me, even though I really can't afford it. I try to go for plants instead as they tend to last longer than a week. x

i love real flowers there is nothing like the smell, but i agree with you on the cost which is why for the first time ever i got some fake roses for my bedroom window and some sweetpeas for my sideboard and you would never know they were not real i agree they have come on a lot ;-)) dee x

I love flowers too, and I go for whatever takes my fancy! I have a friend who is a feng shui master and she came and "fengshuied" my house which has some dark corners in it. She told me that as far as "energy" goes silk is as good as real as it lifts the spirits and brings spring and summer into the house, which is a good thing in fengshui, apparently. So now I have silk roses dotted around, as well as real flowers in jars, and I love it. I really like your swag of flowers over the dresser, they look beautiful. I'm glad you like your earrings, and that they reached you safely. Em x

I agree with you that fake flowers have come a long way. They used to be so naf!!! I have a mixture of both fresh and fake at home. Several visitors have been fooled by them. I really like the floral garland draped over your cupboard.
